2026 Ballon d’Or: Osimhen and Lookman miss out of shortlist
By Chris Umosen
Despite their impressive performances on the global stage, Nigerian stars Victor Osimhen (Galatasaray) and Ademola Lookman (Atletico Madrid) have been left out of the 10-man shortlist for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
Organized by France Football, the award is widely considered the most prestigious individual honor in world football. Although both players maintained strong form for their respective clubs and the Super Eagles, they were unable to crack the final ten in a highly competitive year.
Nigerian players have seen a rise in the rankings recently:
-
Victor Osimhen: In 2023, he finished 8th, the highest ranking ever for a Nigerian. He surpassed the long-standing record held by Nwankwo Kanu, who placed 11th in 1996.
-
Ademola Lookman: Following a historic Europa League hat-trick, he finished 14th in the 2024 rankings.
The 2026 top contenders
The race for the 2026 crown features a star-studded lineup. The current favorites to take home the golden ball include:
| Player | Club |
| Kylian Mbappé | Real Madrid |
| Harry Kane | Bayern Munich |
| Lamine Yamal | Barcelona |
| Declan Rice | Arsenal |
| Erling Haaland | Manchester City |
| Pedri | Barcelona |
| Ousmane Dembélé | Paris Saint-Germain |
| Vinícius Jr. | Real Madrid |
| Lionel Messi | Inter Miami |
| Luis Díaz | Bayern Munich |
The football world now waits to see which of these ten icons will be crowned the overall winner.

If you want to add a “Analysis” section to your piece, here are three key reasons why they likely missed the top 10 this year:
-
Competitive Field: The 2026 race is dominated by players in the “Big Three” clubs (Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona). With Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane putting up historic numbers, there is very little room at the top.
-
Tournament Influence: The 2026 World Cup year often places a heavy weight on international success. Players like Lamine Yamal and Declan Rice have benefitted from deep runs with their national teams.
-
Recent Injuries: For Osimhen specifically, his recent forearm fracture during Galatasaray’s Champions League clash with Liverpool might have sidelined him during the crucial voting period, affecting his visibility.
