Opposition retakes government in Ghana

Although the results of the last Saturday’s general polls are yet to be officially announced (as at the time of writing this on Sunday) by the Electoral Commission (EC), Ghana’s Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has conceded defeat in the election to the opposition party’s candidate and former president John Mahama.

“The people of Ghana have spoken and they have voted for change at this time. We respect this with all humility”, Bawumia declared, regarding the election that was held amid rising cost of living and unemployment among young Ghanaians.

Bawumia informed that he had called and congratulated former president Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Mahama confirmed what Bawumia said. The NDC spokesman Sammy Gyamfi had told reporters that Mahama won 56.3% of the election against his opponents’ 41.3%.

On how he knew their opponent had won the election, Bawumia admitted that from their own party, NPP’s internal vote collation, they knew that their opponent had won the presidential election “decisively”, as well as the parliamentary one.
