Ukanafun in uproar over nepotism in Gov Eno’s empowerment programme

PDP State Chairman, former state legislator under fire

A fatal controversy is currently wrecking Ukanafun LGA of Akwa Ibom State, following allegations of nepotism against the PDP State Chairman, Elder Aniekan Akpan, and a former Member of the State legislature, Dr Charity Ido.

This is a fallout of a Town Square meeting held on Tuesday, April 29, in Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, by Gov Umo Eno.

The meeting, aimed at empowering citizens through various initiatives, has instead sparked disquiet among residents of Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The discontent follows the nomination process for the empowerment scheme, where some individuals exploited their positions to secure benefits for themselves and their families.

Elder Aniekan Akpan, the PDP State Chairman, comes under scrutiny for nominating his two children: Editi Aniekan Akpan and Ekemini Aniekan Akpan as found in number 15 and 16 of the empowerment list contained in the ceremony’s programme of events.

Furthermore, he allegedly nominated his nephew, Iniodu Moses Sam, as a beneficiary of the mini-bus initiative, securing the number one slot in that category.

Additionally, Dr. Charity Ido, the immediate past State House Member representing the constituency, has been accused of nominating herself as a beneficiary of the traders’ grant scheme. Her full name, Charity Friday Ido and phone number appeared on No.22 of the Farmers Grant’s section.

A constituent from Ukanafun, Itoro Udo expressed disappointment and frustration, stating, “It’s disheartening to see privileged politicians exploit their positions to corner benefits meant for the less privileged.

“This is a clear abuse of power and a betrayal of the trust placed in them by the people.”

Itoro Udo further condemned such excesses, saying, “When those in positions of authority use their influence to secure benefits for themselves and their families, it undermines the very purpose of these initiatives.

“It’s unacceptable and goes against the principles of fairness and equity.”
