LP set to expel Obi, Otti

The Labour Partys Deputy National Chairman, Ayo Olorunfemi, has revealed that the partys next National Executive Council (NEC) meeting will be critical in determining the fate of key figures such as its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, amid allegations of anti-party activities.

This disclosure follows recent tensions stirred by factional National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, who declared that Peter Obi would soon face expulsion for backing the new opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Arabambi argued that Obis support for ADC, while claiming Labour Party membership, is unconstitutional.

Despite participating in the launch of the ADC as a unified opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections, Obi has publicly maintained his loyalty to the Labour Party.

Olorunfemi acknowledged the intensifying internal crisis and confirmed that only the NECLabours second-highest decision-making bodyhas the authority to decide disciplinary outcomes. However, he noted that no date has yet been set for the meeting as consultations are ongoing.

We are due for another NEC meeting, particularly in light of recent developments. The decision on Peter Obi and Gov Alex Otti will be addressed there. The NEC holds the mandate to take such actions, but for now, no date has been fixed, Olorunfemi said.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to party discipline and said the NEC will evaluate all recent actions deemed to conflict with the party’s interests.
