Blood moon scare: Nigerians react to rare lunar eclipse

•Say world coming to an end

Nigerians were left spellbound and, in some cases, panicked when a rare lunar eclipse lit up the night sky on Sunday, September 7, 2025.

The “blood moon” phenomenon, characterized by the Moon’s reddish hue, sparked a mix of fascination and trepidation among citizens.

The celestial event, visible around 8 pm in Lagos and other cities, had many taking to social media to share their experiences and, in some instances, express fears that the world was coming to an end.

However, scientists quickly stepped in to debunk the myths surrounding the lunar eclipse.

According to experts, a lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth positions itself directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the lunar surface.

Frank Bello, an astronomer who spoke with WatchmanPost Sunday night, said that the reddish appearance of the Moon is due to Rayleigh scattering (where shorter blue wavelengths of light scatter), leaving longer red wavelengths to dominate.

He said, “This natural phenomenon is completely safe to view and has no connection to superstition or impending doom.”

Also speaking to WatchmanPost, Miracle Edem who is an environmentalist, stated that lunar eclipses are predictable and occur in cycles, providing opportunities for people to witness and learn.

The recent eclipse, lasting approximately 83 minutes, was a rare spectacle that offered insights into the workings of the celestial environments.

Reports say the lunar eclipse was visible across much of Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Benin, Togo, Niger, Chad, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

While some Nigerians marveled at the beauty of the “blood moon,” others expressed concern, drawing parallels to biblical prophecies that associate celestial events with significant changes or end-times scenarios.

As documented in Joel 2:31 and Revelation 6:12, these prophecies have contributed to the mystique surrounding lunar eclipses.
