Akpabio dimisses support group appointments, says their activities voluntary

The Office of the President of the Senate has dismissed claims circulating on social media linking Senate President, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, to alleged appointments within a political support group known as Team Akpabio for Tinubu (TAT), describing such narratives as misleading and unfounded.

In a press statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President of the Senate, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, the office clarified that “Senator Akpabio has no affiliation with, or operational knowledge of, the internal affairs of any political support group.”

According to the statement, “such groups are voluntary associations formed independently by their members, who act on their own initiative… and do not require the approval, endorsement, or authorization of the President of the Senate.”

The statement further debunked claims attributed to one Hon. Aondoaver Nyakuma regarding an alleged appointment, stressing that Senator Akpabio neither knows him nor appointed him to any position.

“Senator Akpabio does not know Hon. Aondoaver Nyakuma and has never appointed him, or any other individual, to any position within any political support group,” the statement said.

Addressing insinuations of political tension in Benue State, the Office of the President of the Senate emphasised that Senator Akpabio maintains a cordial and respectful relationship with the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.

It noted clearly that the Senate President “harbours no personal or political dispute with him.”

The statement also underscored the constitutional role of the Senate President, explaining that Senator Akpabio does not represent Benue State in the National Assembly and therefore has no obligation to intervene in the state’s internal political matters.

“His role as President of the Senate is national, constitutional, and institutional,” the statement added.

The Office of the President of the Senate consequently urged the public and the media to disregard any reports or narratives attempting to link Senator Akpabio to claims, appointments, or grievances arising from private political groups, reaffirming that such activities remain purely voluntary and independent of his office.
