Trump and Pope Leo XIV in faceoff over Iran
Tensions have reached a boiling point between US President Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV regarding the ongoing conflict in Iran.
The U.S. President has flatly refused to apologise to the Pontiff for his series of public criticisms aimed at the Vatican’s anti-war stance.
According to the Independent, the friction began on 31 March, three days into the American/Israeli war on Iran, when Pope Leo issued a rare, direct appeal from Castel Gandolfo, urging the Trump administration to find an “off-ramp” from the conflict.
The situation intensified on 7 April, when the Pope condemned the President’s threats against Iranian civilization as “unacceptable.”
On 12 April, Trump fired back, stating bluntly, “I’m not a fan of Pope Leo.” The Pontiff responded the next day, vowing to “continue to speak out loudly against war,” while Trump doubled down, insisting he had “nothing to apologise for.”
Incidentally, the pontiff, currently undertaking a five-African nation tour, is the first American to hold that office. Also, while Trump has a strong political backing from Conservative American Christians, the Pope is the leader of the largest and wealthiest Christian denomination of all time.
