AKSG addresses budgetary concerns amid recent media scrutiny

In response to recent media attention surrounding the Akwa Ibom State Government’s 2024 budget proposals— particularly concerning estimated allocations for renovations and vehicle purchases — the state government has released a detailed explanation to clarify its rationale.

The Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong, emphasized that the figures in question are projections, and not actual expenditures, having been publicly discussed and approved by the state legislature.

In a media release issued on Saturday, October 19, Ini Ememobong said the Governor’s Office Annex, which houses over 300 civil servants and several essential state government offices, was in need of repairs.

According to him, the building includes a hall that has been out of use due to its dilapidated condition, despite its potential as a revenue-generating space.

He said the upcoming renovations are deemed necessary for the effective functioning of government.

Similarly, the Commissioner explained that based on professional recommendations, the government is planning renovations at Governor’s Lodge and Deputy Governor’s Lodge, to address erosion threats impacting on the Government House.

He added that Governor Umo Eno had proposed transforming the erosion site into the ARISE Recreation Park, with future renovations expected to require a smaller scope than initially outlined.

With regards to purchase of vehicles for assembly members, the Commissioner noted that the budget includes provisions for vehicles to support assembly members in fulfilling their official responsibilities.

“While the original proposal called for two vehicles—an official vehicle and a project inspection vehicle—only one has been purchased”, he said.

Ememobong said the Umo Eno administration is committed to fiscal responsibility, as over N35 billion has been allocated to resolve outstanding labour-related financial commitments, while also providing support to over 132,000 families through the ARISE free food program, distributing over N1.5 billion in farm inputs, and constructing homes for vulnerable individuals.

Acknowledging the current economic climate, Commissioner Ememobong stressed the necessity of government officials having the resources they need to operate effectively, despite the prevailing challenges.

He reassured citizens that the administration’s expenditure will be prudent and aimed at maximizing benefits for the populace.

The administration calls on the public for continued understanding and support as it strives to meet the needs of the citizens of Akwa Ibom State.

    1. Congratulations on your academic attainments! However, it is not clear why you say that “Uniuyo VC has refused to employ us.” Were you guys on UNIUYO scholarship? Does the school owe you any contractual obligation? If the two questions attract ‘no’ answers, I suggest you move on. There are possibilities elsewhere. My views, please.
