CBCN: State, altar must synergise for nation building – Akpabio

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, has emphasized the importance of collaboration between the state and the church in nation building.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the second plenary session of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) held in Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio stressed that the partnership between the government and the church is crucial for the transformation of Nigeria.

He noted that “When Church and State walk together in mutual respect, when they stand side by side as guardians of truth and justice, then the people flourish.”

Akpabio highlighted the significance of the partnership between the state and the church, citing examples from history and scripture.

He quoted the Psalmist, who declared, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord”, and referenced the words of Jesus Christ, who said, “Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s.”

Akpabio emphasized that this partnership is not about domination or rivalry but about working together for the good of the people.

The Senate President cited examples of successful collaboration between the church and the state in other countries.

He mentioned Poland, where the Catholic Church played a significant role in the country’s transition to democracy; and Latin America, where the Church has been instrumental in promoting social justice and human rights.

Senator Akpabio cited the role of the Church in South Korea, where it contributed to the country’s economic development and democratization.

Akpabio praised the Nigerian Church for its role in promoting democracy and human rights in the country.

He commended the Church for speaking out against injustice and oppression, even in the face of adversity.

Recalling the examples of Archbishop Gabriel Ganaka of Jos and Cardinal Anthony Okogie of Lagos, Akpabio stated that they were vocal in their criticism of military rule and advocacy for democracy.

Godswill Akpabio called on the Church to continue to play an active role in nation building.

He urged Catholics and all people of faith to bring their faith into the marketplace, into the corridors of power, and into the public service.

He encouraged them to be like Daniel, Nehemiah, and Moses, who were faithful in governance and undefiled in conscience.

Citing numerous pieces of legislations achieved during his tenure, especially due to strong collaboration with the President Tinubu led executive, Akpabio pledged that the Senate would continue to work with the Church in promoting the common good and uplifting the Nigerian people.
