FG approves digital postcode system to modernise mail and logistics
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has officially approved the implementation of a GIS-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system for Nigeria.
The announcement was made public by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, following a council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
This development marks a pivotal milestone for an initiative that has been in the works for several years.
Key Timeline of the Initiative
2022: NIPOST and the National Population Commission (NPC) signed an MoU to begin the rollout.
2023: Initial launch targets were set for June but were subsequently delayed.
2026: Final FEC approval granted to modernize Nigeria’s national addressing framework.
Strategic impact and benefits
In a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter), Minister Tijani emphasised that this system is a core component of the ministry’s strategic blueprint.
Developed in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), the geospatial system aims to:
Enhance accuracy: Provide a modern, intelligent addressing framework to eliminate delivery errors, accelerate mail and parcel processing across all 36 states,
aid in urban planning, improve emergency response times, and boost e-commerce reliability. It would also simplify the delivery of government services to citizens and businesses.
”As Nigeria’s digital economy expands, foundational infrastructure—such as a modern addressing system—is critical to connecting citizens and public institutions efficiently,” Tijani noted.
The Minister concluded that the move underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to creating a globally competitive and inclusive digital economy.
