- Fubara dumps PDP for APC
Mere days after 15 legislators of the Rivers State House of Assembly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the big elephant in the hall, Governor Simi Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has also defected to the ruling APC from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to Channels TV, Fubara announced his decision at a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Tuesday, 9 December.
His exit from the PDP months after his return to office would surprise only a few. One professor of Mass Communication, (name withheld), reacting to the development, said , “his exit was just a matter of time.”
While subjected to what many saw as a political witch hunt, there were speculations that one of the conditions the Tinubu government gave to him to return office was that he should defect to the APC ahead of the 2027 polls.
Fubara’s tenure has been dogged by banana peels strewn on his pathway by his political godfather, Mr. Nyesom Wike, whom he succeeded as governor. That faceoff led to his controversial suspension from office by the Tinubu presidency on 18 March, 2025.
Tinubu did not only suspend him, he removed the entire democratic structure from office, in what many believed was a clear political witch hunt orchestrated by Wike, now the Federal Capital Territory Minister.
With his exit from the hugely troubled PDP, where Wike still holds sway, the days ahead may see Wike formally exiting the PDP as well.
