The House of Representatives on Thursday voted overwhelmingly to support President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
This comes after Tinubu suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months due to the escalating political crisis in the state.
President Tinubu’s letter seeking approval for the emergency rule declaration was read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbass during a plenary session on Thursday.
The lawmakers then took to a voice vote, with an overwhelming majority backing the President’s decision.
Notably, 243 lawmakers attended the session, ensuring a quorum was met.
This development marks a significant escalation in the political situation in Rivers State, with the federal government taking decisive action to restore order.
The declaration of a state of emergency grants the President sweeping powers to manage the crisis, including the suspension of Governor Fubara and his deputy, as well as all elected House of Assembly Members.
The President who announced the appointment of vice admiral Ibokette Ibas as Administrator, had conducted his swearing in Wednesday, March 19 at the Presidential Villa.
Meanwhile, a trending video surfaced on line on Thursday afternoon of Gov Fubara walking lonely out of the Rivers State Government House.
