IBB urges FG to reject bandits’ surrender plea, seeks total military crackdown

Former military Head of State, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has called on the Federal Government to ignore appeals for surrender from bandits operating across the country, insisting that security forces must first deal decisively with the criminals.

Babangida made the call in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he urged a firm military response against armed groups terrorising communities nationwide.

According to him, security agencies should focus on completely neutralising bandits before considering any form of dialogue or negotiation.

He warned that accepting surrender too early could weaken efforts to end insecurity, stressing that the government should not be swayed by appeals from criminal elements.

“While the bandits are pleading for surrender, we must not accept their plea until every one of them is neutralised and eliminated,” Babangida wrote.

The former leader further stated that after security agencies achieve this goal, individuals he described as negotiators and sympathisers, mentioning Sheikh Ahmad Gumi and others, should be invited by authorities for thorough questioning.

Babangida’s comments have generated widespread reactions on social media, with Nigerians expressing mixed views on his hardline position.

Some users supported his stance. A social media user identified as Dr. Jay backed the call, arguing that those perceived as sympathisers should already be under scrutiny by security agencies.

Another commenter, Phyno, cautioned that public opinion in Nigeria often shifts quickly, warning against sudden changes in support for controversial positions.

Also reacting, Ikechukwu described Babangida’s remarks as timely, adding that strict implementation could help achieve lasting security.

The comments come amid ongoing national debates on the most effective strategies for addressing banditry, insurgency, and rising insecurity in various parts of the country.
