Moses Okon Unanaowo, a native of Oyoku Ibighi in Urue-Offong Oruko LGA of Akwa Ibom State holds B.Sc. in Computer Science and an MBA in Marketing from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, as well as a PGD in Computer Science (specializing in Artificial Intelligence) from Babcock University. With a background in engineering consultancy and over 20 years of experience in the aviation industry, Unanaowo currently serves as the National Vice President of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE). In this interview with WatchmanPost, the aviation expert spoke of the immense potentials in the ICT and aviation sectors and seeks the state’s investments in the areas. Excerpts:
Question: As an ICT and aviation expert, would you say the Akwa Ibom State Government is on the right track in terms of investment in ICT and aviation?
Answer: ICT is a multi-billion-dollar industry with immense potentials for transforming Akwa Ibom State. Investment in this sector can create jobs, reduce crime, and boost economic growth. On aviation, I am proud of the progress made, starting from the administration of Obong Victor Attah, sustained by Godswill Akpabio, Udom Emmanuel, and now Governor Umo Eno. Akwa Ibom has become a leader in aviation, proving that managing a carrier is achievable. To further this progress, I recommend that the state government should incorporate ICT into primary education with properly trained teachers; establish ICT centers across the state and promoting computer literacy; and then set up an aviation academy to offer diploma programmes, which could later evolve into a full-fledged university, to attract students nationwide.
Question: There’s an SSA, SA, and PA to the Governor on ICT, and a bill is underway to establish a Bureau for Digital Economy. What do you make of these efforts?
Answer: I commend the governor for these initiatives and urge quick passage of the bill. California’s Silicon Valley, driven by technology, has a GDP of over $1.4 trillion. Akwa Ibom can replicate this success with the right political will. Developing the digital economy will enhance the state’s competitiveness, optimize IGR generation, and create opportunities for exporting local products, thereby attracting foreign revenue.
Question: The Governor’s ARISE Agenda seems to have been embraced by the people. What are your thoughts on its components?
Answer: Governor Umo Eno’s passion for Akwa Ibom is evident. However, successfully driving the ARISE Agenda requires a team that truly understands and aligns with his vision. As stated in Habakkuk 2:2, “Write the vision and make it plain so that whoever reads it can run with it.” Without understanding, it’s impossible to implement the vision effectively. The Governor needs a dedicated team capable of delivering results for the benefit of the people.
Question: It’s 18 months into this administration, can you rate the governor’s performance?
Answer: Although I reside in Lagos, I visit Akwa Ibom regularly and have observed remarkable progress. The administration has prioritized infrastructure, security, agriculture, aviation, and human capital development. Governor Umo Eno’s determination to develop the state is clear, and I urge everyone to support his vision for the continued growth and prosperity of Akwa Ibom.
Question: Commissioners have been relieved of their duties, and new ones will be appointed soon. What, in your opinion should form the governor’s yardstick for selection of his new exco members?
Answer: The governor should prioritize individuals who understand the ARISE Agenda and are committed to executing it. He should consider those who possess relevant expertise and a patriotic. He should go for those who are results-driven and not mere praise singers.
He should establish clear key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate performance and ensure accountability in governance.
Question: Many say Nigeria is tough for young talents to thrive. Do you agree?
Answer: This is largely a mindset issue. Having traveled to over 12 countries, I can attest that success abroad isn’t as easy as many think. Young Nigerians need to look inward, collaborate with the government, and embrace patriotism. Nigeria offers immense opportunities in agriculture, human capital, and ICT resources. Changing our perception of our country is key to unlocking its potential.
Question: What is your message to the governor and the people of Akwa Ibom?
Answer: To Gov Umo Eno, stay focused, courageous, and steadfast in implementing the ARISE Agenda. Leverage on technology to drive progress across all sectors. To the people of Akwa Ibom, it is my hope that you support and pray for the governor. Offer constructive criticism when necessary. Together, we can achieve unprecedented growth. May God bless Akwa Ibom State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
