Insecurity escalation: Katsina shuts public schools

As insecurity spreads across the country, particularly in the North, the Katsina State Government has, as preemptive measure, shut down all public schools.

The State’s Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Yusuf Sulaiman Jibia, disclosed this to journalists yesterday in Katsina.

He explained that the measure became necessary to safeguard students and teachers as security agencies implemented a new statewide safety strategy for schools, reports The Nation.

Jibia noted that although the measure will affect negatively students who were writing examinations, protecting lives and property were of greater priority for the government at this time.

He said that the measure was a temporary step that will remain in place pending a comprehensive security review of identified high-risk areas.

The Nation said its finding showed that the decision followed recent abductions of secondary school students in Kebbi and Niger states, which have heightened anxiety among families and authorities across the North-West.

Katsina State, the home of late President Muhammadu Buhari, has witnessed abduction of secondary school children before.
