Malami: I am innocent, no ammunition found in my house

Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Abubakar Malami, has strongly denied allegations that arms or ammunition were discovered in his residence, describing the claims as false, speculative and part of a sustained media trial aimed at damaging his reputation and political ambition ahead of the 2027 Kebbi State governorship election.

In a statement issued Thursday, on his behalf by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, Malami said no cache of arms or ammunition was found in any property linked to him, stressing that no official authority has communicated such a discovery to his family or legal representatives.

“The claims are completely untrue, unsubstantiated and unsupported by any official record, judicial document or lawful disclosure,” the statement said.

“At no time was any arms or ammunition found in any residence connected to Abubakar Malami, SAN.”

Malami also dismissed allegations linking him to terrorism or terrorism financing, noting that the accusations were made without reference to any named individual, organisation, transaction or verifiable evidence.

He described the insinuations as irresponsible and dangerous, warning that they undermine constitutional guarantees of presumption of innocence and due process.

According to the statement, Malami has not been convicted of any offence, yet sections of the media have continued to present allegations and ongoing investigations as established facts.

The former minister argued that such reporting violates his fundamental rights and amounts to a “trial by headlines.”

The statement further raised concern over Malami’s continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS), alleging that since his arrest on Monday, he has been denied access to his family, legal team and associates.

This, it said, raises serious concerns about his welfare and constitutionally guaranteed right to legal counsel.

Beyond the legal issues, Malami’s camp pointed to what it described as clear political undertones surrounding the allegations.

The statement recalled that Malami is a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and has openly declared his intention to contest the Kebbi State governorship election in 2027.
