Police Council Confirms Olatunji Disu as Inspector General of Police

  1. ​The National Police Council has officially confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP). Following this confirmation, his name will be forwarded to the Senate for screening and final approval.

​Appointment and transition

​President Bola Tinubu initially appointed Disu as acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

​At a brief ceremony held at Louis Edet House in Abuja, Disu officially took over the reins of the Nigeria Police Force. During the event, President Tinubu decorated him with his new rank, fulfilling a prior commitment to formalize the appointment through the Police Council and the Senate.

​A distinguished career

​Disu, 59, brings extensive operational experience to the role. Before this appointment, he served as the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. Highlights of his career include:Diverse Leadership: Served as Commissioner of Police in both Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).​Specialized Units: Previously headed the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS).

Field Experience: Served as a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ogun, Ondo, and Rivers States, and led various anti-robbery and anti-kidnapping operations.

​A native of Lagos Island, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992. He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

​Vision outlook

​During the handover ceremony, Disu outlined a clear mandate for his leadership, emphasizing a shift toward contemporary policing standards.​”My tenure will be built on three clear commitments: professionalism, modernism, and accountability,” Disu stated, promising to deliver a police force that is both transparent and responsive to the needs of Nigerians.
