- Seplat committed to strengthening education in Nigeria – Spokesman
At a time when worries over poor public education funding, examination malpractices and general dip in education quality in Nigeria, Seplat Petroleum Energy Unlimited says it has invested hugely in the uplift of education in the country.
According to its General Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Mr Ogechukwu Udeaga,the company has been doing this via its Seplat Teachers Employment (STEAM) Programme and other initiatives under its corporate social investment policy.
Between 1995 and 2025, Udeaga said that his organisation has awarded 120 scholarships per annum, with specific attention on indigent students, explaining that the company allocated 30 per cent of the opportunities to host communities, 30 per cent to states and 40 to the nation.
STEAM, he disclosed focused on teaching, learning, and entrepreneurial capacity development, adding that 300 teachers per annum have benefitted from the programme, just as 1,235 undergraduates have also benefitted from its scholarship programme since 2014.
To strengthen the programme, the Public Affairs and Government Manager General Manager disclosed that the company has set up nine solar-powered multipurpose laboratories in its host communities.
Mr Udeaga who was speaking in Eket during a media event recently, disclosed that Seplat has also within the period sponsored 80 students in private secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State.
He further stated that since 2012, Seplat has impacted 61,390 teachers through sponsorships of their capacity building.
According to Mr Udeaga, his company has graduated 781 beneficiaries from its Technical Training Centre since 1995, even as 50 students enrolled there in 2024.
