Tinubu bows to public pressure, reviews clemency list

Following public criticisms of his pardon granted some individuals convicted of various crimes, President Bola Tinubu has made a U-turn by reviewing the list.

Accordingly, he has signed instruments of clemency and pardon to give legal backing to his constitutional power of prerogative of mercy to grant relief to such individuals derivable from Section 175 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, explained that the review followed consultations with the Council of State and wide public opinion on the issue.

The reviewed list no longer includes names of persons convicted of serious crimes like kidnapping, drug-related offences, human trafficking, fraud, and unlawful possession or dealing in firearms.
