This year’s local government council election in Akwa Ibom State will now hold on 5th October 2024, and not 26th October as announced earlier.
The Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), the body charged with the responsibility of conducting the election, announced this in Uyo, the State capital, through its chairman, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak, at a meeting in his office with chairmen of 19 registered political parties in the State.
Ikoiwak stated that the AKISIEC Law provides for 90-150 days according to the constitutional time frame, but that the announcement falls within 120 days from the date of issuance of notice of election. Political parties are, therefore, to start their party primaries, which AKISIEC will observe, on 22nd July 2024, according to the timetable.
Currently, all local government areas in the state are run by caretaker committees.
