Tinubu addresses nation tomorrow

President Bola Tinubu is to address Nigerians tomorrow, Sunday, 4th August 2024, by 7 O’clock in the morning, a release from his media adviser, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, says.

This would be coming on the 4th day of the nationwide protests against his government over economic hardship, rising cost of living, insecurity, increased taxation, among others, most of his countrymen and women are facing.

Mr. Tinubu, who took over from his fellow political party member, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari, has faced multiple-layer criticisms over his style of administration, marked by withdrawal of fuel and electricity subsidies, rising inflation and official profligacy, which have worsened a bad economy he inherited.

While key members of his government have been understandably opposed to the
protests, talking at times carelessly, the president has remained silent.

His Vice President, Mr. Kashim Shettima, has been quoted as describing the protesters as bandits, while Senate President Godwill said that those who want to protest could go ahead, while he and his unnamed “we”, would be sitting at home eating.

The statements by the two leading politicians have attracted scathing criticisms from many Nigerians, with one of the protesters talking backvto Kashim in kind.

The presidential address of tomorrow would be aired on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), and would be repeated on the same media channels at 3p.m. on the same day.

It is expected that Tinubu’s broadcast would assuage the feelings of agitated Nigerians and take the protesters off the streets.

The protests have claimed several lives and ruined many businesses, especially in the northern part of country, where criminals seized the opportunity of the demonstrations to loot shops and vandalise government properties.
