Security expert Mumuni says Tinubu’s Türkiye visit strategic for national defence
Amid growing insecurity in the country, security expert and APC chieftain, Ambassador Abayomi Mumuni, says President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to Türkiye is an opportunity for Nigeria to enhance its counterterrorism efforts and expand military collaboration.
In a press statement released Tuesday (yesterday), through his spokesman, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni stressed that the visit transcends routine diplomacy.
For him, it presents a ready window to revitalise Nigeria’s long-standing defence partnership with Türkiye.
Mumuni, who was part of the intelligence and security team of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Counci, pointed to Türkiye’s rising profile in global defence as what Nigeria can benefit from.
His words, ”While Nigeria and Türkiye have shared decades of cooperation in trade and education, current realities demand a sharper focus on counterterrorism, hardware procurement, and strategic military partnerships,” Mumuni stated, according to thenationonline.ng.
Mumuni drew attention to Türkiye’s broad experience in security and conflict management, suggesting that this could be of advantage for Nigeria to adopt.
WatchmanPost recalls that in the aftermath of the US’ strike on terrorist camps in parts of Northern Nigeria last Christmas, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, notorious for his support for terrorists in the country, urged Nigeria to break up its military partnership with the US.
Gumi, who accused America of fighting terrorism with unclean hands, urged Nigeria to rather look elsewhere, including Türkiye, for military collaboration.
It is unclear whether President Bola Tinubu’s visit to the Islamic country has anything to do with Gumi’s outbursts, as in spite of numerous calls on government to arrest and prosecute the Islamic scholar, nothing like that has been done.
