2027: NDC hits over 80,000 membership, set to challenge A’Ibom ruling party

A newly formed political party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says it has surpassed 80,000 registered members in Akwa Ibom State as it positions itself to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party disclosed this following a strategic meeting held on Friday, April 3, 2026, where it also ratified chapter chairmen across all 31 local government areas, strengthening its grassroots presence across the state.

WatchmanPost reported a fortnight ago that NDC was unveiled during her maiden statewide meeting convened by its leadership in the state.

Speaking to our reporter, the State Chairman of the party, Dr. Bassey Willie, said the growing membership and newly consolidated structure reflect the party’s readiness for broader political engagement.

He added that the meeting also witnessed the formal reception of key defectors from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the development as a boost to the party’s expanding influence.

Among the defectors received were Comrade Samuel Eyo from Mbo Local Government Area and Hon. Michael Nsikak William from Oruk Anam.

Dr. Willie further noted that the party is aligning its state structure with resolutions reached at its recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, particularly on inclusive leadership.

According to him, women, youths, and persons with disabilities will be prominently featured in strategic positions at both state and grassroots levels.

As part of this effort, Apostle Joseph King Edidem was named Vice Chairman for Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, while Pastor Christopher Udo-Offong emerged as Vice Chairman for Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District. Obonganwan Uduakobong Okon was also appointed as State Woman Leader.

Other key officers include Hon. Kufremfon Effiong, who will serve as Welfare Secretary, alongside the ratified chapter chairmen across the 31 local government areas.

Dr. Willie expressed confidence that the party’s growing membership strength and inclusive leadership structure would position the NDC as a formidable contender in the 2027 elections.

Party stakeholders at the meeting reiterated their commitment to building a broad-based political movement capable of reshaping Akwa Ibom’s political landscape.

With increasing defections from established parties and a rapidly expanding base, the NDC appears set to play a significant role in the state’s evolving political dynamics.
