Osun guber poll: Adeleke secures second term with 511,067 votes
The high stake off-cycle Osun State gubernatorial election held yesterday, climaxed today with INEC declaring the Accord Party candidate and sitting governor Ademola Adeleke, winner.
According to the returning officer for the polls, Joshua Olalekun Ogunwole, Adeleke polled 511,067 votes, while his closest rival, Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, scored 44,815 votes, and the African Democratic Congress candidate received 17,180 votes to come a distant third.
Whereas Adeleke won in 19, Oyebanyi won in 11 of the 30 LGAs of the state.
The returning officer disclosed that a total of 985,079 valid votes were cast in the election, while 20,721 votes were invalid, and 1,009,800 were the total votes cast.
Apparently concerned about the insecurity that seemed to be rising in the state ahead of the poll, President Bola Tinubu on the eve of the ballot directed the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, and other heads of security agencies on what to do about the election.
“I have charged the Inspector-General of Police and other heads of security outfits taking part in the election to provide maximum security at polling units. No room should be allowed for troublemakers to disrupt the process,” he said.
Addedly, the President urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the “orderly conduct of the election”.
“The election must be transparent, free and fair. I urge INEC to ensure the integrity of the process,” he said in a statement.
With the conclusion of the polls, which witnessed thousands of security operatives on ground, eyes would be turned now on Adeleke to visit justice on the brains behind the pre-election violence which took the lives of dozens and posed threat to public order and safety.
