INEC commits to delivering credible elections in Akwa Ibom

Amid growing public discourse regarding election integrity, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Akwa Ibom State, Prof. Anugbum Onuoha, has reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to neutrality, transparency, and strict adherence to the Electoral Act 2026.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement with media practitioners at the INEC headquarters in Uyo, Prof. Onuoha emphasised that the media are indispensable to strengthening democracy and bolstering public confidence in the electoral process.

The REC identified the press as a critical partner in voter education and public enlightenment. He stressed that professional, balanced, and responsible journalism was essential for maintaining the credibility of the nation’s electoral framework.

”The Commission deeply values the contribution of media practitioners in keeping the public informed and fostering a clearer understanding of electoral guidelines,” Onuoha stated.

To ensure a seamless flow of information, the REC assured political actors and stakeholders of the Commission’s readiness to provide sustained open engagement for dialogue and prompt responses to electoral inquiries within the legal framework.

He pledged to work alongside the press to provide accurate information to the public.

Onuoha urged journalists to uphold the core ethics of their profession—specifically accuracy, fairness, and objectivity.

He also expressed appreciation for the media’s ongoing coverage of INEC’s programmes, reiterating that the Commission remained determined to deliver peaceful and transparent elections that will reflect the will of Akwa Ibom people.

Through sustained cooperation between the Commission, the media, and the public, the REC expressed optimism that democratic governance and electoral integrity in the state will continue to thrive.
