Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to the Republic of South Africa, Senator Ita Enang, has vowed to seek legal redress if any provisions of the Electoral Act are compromised during the 2027 general elections.

Senator Enang issued the warning on Friday at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo during the Annual Dinner and Award Night organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council. The event also featured the unveiling of Critique magazine and the launch of a N15 million solar power facility.

Addressing journalists at the Patience Eno Auditorium, the veteran lawmaker urged the media to ensure their coverage of the 2027 electoral cycle remains strictly within the bounds of the law.

”In your reportage of politics and activities leading up to the 2027 electoral process, please read the Electoral Act and its provisions first,” Enang advised. “Let your reports be aligned with the law. Let us jointly protect our democracy.”

He emphasised that he would personally monitor the process for irregularities. “I will not hesitate to head to the courts if I feel that certain provisions of the Electoral Act are breached,” he stated.

Reflecting on his 26 years in the National Assembly, Senator Enang noted that his career has been dedicated to bridging the gap between Akwa Ibom State and federal policies.

He remarked that the state’s current “ARISE Agenda” has successfully integrated with the federal “Renewed Hope Agenda,” and lauded the event’s theme: “From Insight to Action: The Role of the Media in Shaping the ARISE Agenda Legacy.”

The keynote speaker, Dr. Emmanuel Abraham, founder of Topfaith University, challenged journalists to move beyond basic reporting to “developmental journalism.”

According to Dr. Abraham, the media should focus on promoting accountability and transparency, rural and agricultural development, strengthening the relationship between citizens and the government.

”Journalism in the ARISE Agenda should not only inform, entertain, and educate, but inspire,” Abraham noted.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Bassey Anthony, expressed gratitude to the attendees, describing their presence as a testament to the media’s role as a partner in progress.

The evening concluded with several milestones: project launch, the inauguration of a N15 million solar power project for the chapel, the unveiling of the 6th edition of Critique magazine, recognition of several individuals, including a major Award of Excellence presented to Lady Helen Eno Obareki, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State.
