Former United States’ President, Jimmy Carter and Nobel peace laureate, who led his country from 1977 to 1981, is no more. He died, Sunday, 29 December, 2024, aged 100.

Carter, a man with very humble beginnings, was born in the Plains, Georgia, and was the longest living American president.

Before becoming President of the United States of America (POTUS), Carter was governor of the Peach State.

Said to have had brain cancer way back in 2015, Carter died “peacefully” at his home in Plains, “surrounded by his family,” the Carter Centre, his private organisation said.

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love,” Chip Carter, the ex POTUS’ son enthused.

An US Navy veteran and born again personality, Carter brokered the Camp Accords peace deal between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin on 17 September 1978, following twelve days of private negotiations at Camp David, Maryland.

Carter’s administration was seen by many as uninspiring. His attempt to rescue 52 hostages taken by Iran in 1980 was a total flop. In November of that year, his Republican challenger and former governor of California, Ronald Reagan, defeated Carter in the polls.

He founded the Carter Centre in 1982 to pursue world diplomacy, and won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to social and economic justice.

Incidentally, Rosalynn, Carter’s wife of 77 years, died on November 19, 2023, aged 96.

Carter is survived by four children: three sons and a daughter.
