Senate President Godswill Akpabio has expressed optimism that stronger ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom will create greater economic opportunities, attract investment and deliver sustainable returns for both countries.
Akpabio stated this on Thursday, October 22, 2026, after receiving the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Peter Vowles, during a courtesy visit to his office at the National Assembly in Abuja.
He said discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between the Nigerian National Assembly and the British Parliament through legislative exchanges, institutional partnerships and the sharing of parliamentary best practices.
The Senate President emphasised the need for closer engagement between Nigerian lawmakers and their counterparts in the British House of Commons and House of Lords to strengthen democratic institutions and improve legislative processes.
He also urged increased British investment in Nigeria, particularly in the oil, gas and mining sectors, noting that the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration present significant opportunities for long-term partnerships and sustainable returns.
Akpabio acknowledged the longstanding relationship between both countries and commended the warm reception accorded President Tinubu and his delegation by King Charles III during their recent state visit to the United Kingdom.
He welcomed the British High Commissioner’s reaffirmation of the United Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening relations with Nigeria and supporting the National Assembly.
Akpabio reaffirmed his commitment to building parliamentary partnerships that advance Nigeria’s interests, strengthen democracy and contribute to national development.
